How can eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty assist you?

People interested in eyelid surgery essentially face two major problems. They often notice a build up of excess fat behind the eyelids, especially in the lower eyelids. This pushes outward on the eyelid causing a bulge or “bag” to develop. Additionally, people with this problem will notice that when light shines on the bulge, a shadow forms under the lid.  As a result, people  appear tired or dark circles form around the eyes.

The second major problem affecting people with eyelids is wrinkling of the skin, due to a loss of the skin’s natural elastic properties.  People develop these wrinkles as a result of the aging process, sun damage and cigarette smoking. The excess skin can become redundant and hang down, especially on the upper lids, adding to that tired or aged appearance. Excessive drooping of the upper eyelids can even obstruct vision.

Board certified Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Warren M. Lent, has been a pioneer in developing a remarkable method of eyelid surgery.  He employs the use of the laser. With this ultra skilled approach, Dr. Lent blends the highest level of safety with the best aesthetic results.

Why is using a laser so important with eyelid surgery?

Dr. Lent uses the CO2 laser to go behind the eyelid to remove the excess fat. The beauty of the laser is that as it cuts thru tissue it immediately seals or “welds” the blood vessels shut. When using the method, Dr. Lent can decrease the risks of bleeding, especially around the eyes. Additionally, with the laser, patients will often experience less bruising and swelling, allowing for a faster recovery than traditional techniques. For those patient with sun damaged and wrinkled skin of the lower lids, Dr. Lent will often use a laser resurfacing technique designed to eliminate the damaged outer layer of skin and promote the production of new, healthier collagen. Dr. Lent’s method also avoids any visible incision on the outside of the lower eyelid and minimizes the risk of the lid being pulled downward.

Dr. Lent also uses the CO2 laser on the upper lids to remove any excess tissue and protruding fat. The incision is placed in the natural crease in order to provide maximal healing and camouflage. As excess skin, muscle and fat are removed with the laser, the blood vessels are again ‘welded’ shut.

Candidates for laser eyelid surgery include those who have:

• A tired appearance of the eyes

• ‘Bags’ or bulging of the lower eyelids

• Redundant skin, muscle and fat of the upper eyelids

• Obstruction of vision from drooping upper eyelids

• Wrinkling of the eyelid skin

Post Laser Eyelid Surgery

Following a laser blepharoplasty surgery, patients are instructed to place ice on their eyes for 24 hours (15 minutes on the area, followed by 15 minutes with ice off of the skin). Patients should avoid all exercise, heavy lifting and bending-over for two weeks after the procedure. Additionally, those patients who undergo laser resurfacing will be instructed in how to compress with water and/or ointments to aid in the healing process.
